Introducing yourself in Tlingit – Language, Lineage, Respect.

A video that offers the viewer a basic contemporary introduction, a portion of a longer traditional introduction, and a discussion by elders on the importance and content of a proper Tlingit introduction. It is a first look at the Tlingit introduction, revealing the depth of the topic. The introduction connects the speaker with the listeners by acknowledging family, moiety and clan relationships. The speaker in effect says, β€œIt is not my words you are hearing, it is the words of my elders and ancestors.” Tlingit students today live in a world different from their ancestors – how can we introduce ourselves today with integrity, in a way that respects and reflects the values of our elders and ancestors? Duration: 8 Mins.
