Project team: Tlingit Language teachers, cultural specialists and elders
Goldbelt Heritage Foundation is pleased to work with Cultural Resource Specialists. These individuals offer a wide range of knowledge about Tlingit language and culture for educators and others who want to integrate Native culture, language and values into their programs.
My name is Fred White. Daalatjáa is my Tlingit name. I am a member of the Shangukeidí Clan, Xéitl Hít (Eagle/Thunderbird Clan of the Thunderbird House) of the Gunaaxoo Kwaan, Dry Bay Alsek River area near Yakutat, Alaska. I am the Grandchild of the Luknax.adí (Raven/Coho Salmon Clan).
I am the youngest fluent speaker of our Tlingit language. I was raised by my grandparents who spoke only Tlingit. Today my mentors are our precious Tlingit elders that I have worked with for the past 20 years with their recordings of clan history and clan migrations. Over the last few years I have taught Tlingit language to K-12 and community members in Yakutat, Alaska through the Yakutat Tlingit Tribe. My work includes transcribing and translating Tlingit Language on a contractual basis for the past 20 years to Native Organizations.
I am a Tlingit Language Specialist at Goldbelt Heritage Foundation. My primary responsibility is to support the development of language curriculum to be delivered to students at all grade levels and the language learning communities. I am responsible for audio recordings of the Tlingit language with fluent Tlingit elders to create units and distribute project materials to Tlingit language teachers throughout the region to teach and enhance the use of the Tlingit language. Additionally I am responsible for providing Tlingit language instruction on a regular basis to schools within the Juneau School District.
My Tlingit name is Kinkaduneek. This name comes from the Raven House near Haines. I am a child of the Chookaneidí clan. My teachers were my parents, Willie and Emma Marks, my brothers and sisters, my uncles, my aunties and my elders. My clan leader and teacher was Austin Hammond, Sr. I continue to receive guidance and teaching of our language and culture on an ongoing basis.
My western teaching has been from the University of Fairbanks Alaska, Tlingit language class with Dr. Jeff leer. I also attended University of Alaska Anchorage, University of Alaska Southeast, and Conqors Bible College.
I have been teaching for many years in various school districts including Fairbanks, North Star Borough, Anchorage School District, and Juneau School District. I also taught at the University of Alaska Southeast. I also work in my own business teaching Tlingit language and totemic carving classes.
